I will say that if you urgently require your current phone replacement then you do not have any other option then buying the Xiaomi Mi-3 (if you can actually buy it from Flipkart , which has exclusively launched it and it is out of stock now and will come in stock after 1 week) . If you can wait for few months (4-5 months) then I think it will be a worth wait for the new Xiaomi Mi-4 . The main reason for that is its 4G LTE support and lot better cameras .

Samsung vows to ditch the plastic rear for an upcoming handset

Samsung might be ditching the lackluster plastic chassis for an upcoming smartphone, according to a new report by the WSJ.

The news comes after this week saw a $1-billion drop in Sammy profits last quarter blamed on weak Galaxy S5 sales.

Kim Hyun-Joon, a senior VP at Samsung Mobile, apparently told investors during an earnings call that an upcoming Samsung device would be made from ‘new materials’.

Samsung’s been resilient to switch up its use of plastic in smartphones, a design approach that many have described as feeling less premium than competing handsets like the iPhone 5S or the all-metal HTC One M8.

The non-plastic handset in question could be none other than the Galaxy Note 4, which was tipped earlier today for a September 3rd release date.

The upcoming phablet is rumoured for a pre-IFA launch and is expected to tout a 5.7-in display, a 64-bit CPU, a 16MP shooter with optical image stabilisation, with a guesswork mark-up of £550-ish.

With Apple’s next premium flagship fast-approaching, a sans-plastic handset from Samsung could be just the thing to scupper Cupertino cash-flow.

Solar micro-grid project in village Dharnai

July 20, 2014 is a red letter day for Dharnai, a small and peaceful village in Bihar. It’s a day of triumph and celebration. For last 30 years the village was demanding for a basic amenity, they were struggling without power for over 30 years!! Something or other kept on happening and this remote village of Bihar never got this basic amenity.  Dharnai, now proudly owns and operates its own electricity production system which is located right inside the village.

The miracle didn’t happen in one day. They didn’t get any divine intervention either. It is made possible by the sheer determination of Greenpeace India and the residents of Dharnai who join hands together to make the miracle happen.

“We had tried everything in the book to get electricity for the last 30 years. But we haven’t seen a single ray of hope. While India was growing by leaps and bounds, we were stuck here with kerosene lamps and expensive diesel generators. But now I can proudly say that Dharnai is a leader in innovation,” said Kamal Kishore Prasad, resident and Village Electricity Committee chairman of Bishunpur Tolla, Dharnai.

Before we go into the details of solar power project in Dharnai, we need to understand the location, demography and history of this village so that we can comprehend the difficulty level and the true meaning of this project for poor villagers of Dharnai. Dharnai is one of the poorest villages in India located in the northeast segment of Bihar state. It is one of those 19,000 other villages, which do not get power from the traditional grid-based system and in general lack access to the electricity. Right now, one hundred kilowatt (kW) system in Dharnai gives electricity to 450 homes of the 2,400 residents. It also supports 50 commercial operations, two schools, a training centre and a healthcare facility. Power is ensured for 24×7 through a battery backup system. The 100 KW power is used for 70 kW electricity generation and 30 kW, 10 numbers of solar-powered water-pumping systems with three horsepower each. Total system was built within three months and was on a test-run since the March 2014.  Finally, after two months of successful testing, with the eldest person of Dharnai (80 years old) , formally switched it on in front of a supportive crowd of thousands

This is in fact the first village in India which will be 100% solar powered. Greenpeace India is needed to be congratulated for this initiative. They say that they required a heterogeneous village for this model solar micro-grid project. The main occupation of the village was needed to be agriculture. There were other requirements of basic social infrastructure like school, healthcare facility, an anganwadi (communal children centre), a commercial zone and around 400 households.

Now, reliable electricity in the evening has changed the quality of the life and educational opportunities for village children. Not to mention, villagers feel safe and secure with the presence of street lighting during evening.  Reliable power supply has improved the local economy, and boosted the social life of the villagers.

Railways were the first form of rapid land transportation. They monopolized the carrying percentage of passenger traffic till cars and airlines became popular in the early mid of 20th century. Speed was always the main challenging factor for railroads and constant efforts are being made increase the travel speed and decrease the travel time of passengers.
Speed train could cut the travel time between metro areas, alleviate traffic congestion, boosting economic growth and reducing greenhouse gas emission.
High speed rail transport is quicker than traditional rail traffic. It uses an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and tracks. The first speed rail was introduced in Japan during the year, 1964. And it was known as a bullet train over there. High speed trains ply on standard gauge tracks of continuously welded rail on grade- separated right-of-way that incorporates a large turning radius in its design. Many countries have developed high speed rail to connect major cities. High speed rail is usually designed for passenger travel. It can also be used for freight service.

High Speed train moving from Delhi to Agra:
This train is having a speed of 160kmph. It is equipped with an electric locomotive of 5,400HP. One can reach from Delhi to Agra in just 90 minutes. Normally it takes 2-3 hours to reach Agra from Delhi. When it was test trialed, it took 100 minutes instead of 90 minutes. It reached Agra at around 1 p.m. Senior railway officials including Commissioner Railway Safety and Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi and Agra, were present in the train for trial run.

Real High Speed Trains

India has one of the largest rail networks in the world. But, it does not have any high speed rail line which can give a speed of 200 km/h or more. Currently India is focusing on high speed railway tracks so that Indian rails can run faster on current tracks with a maximum speed of 160 to 200 km/h, with an average of 130km/h.
Few of the countries in the world are using powerful electromagnets to develop high speed trains. These trains are known as ‘maglev trains’. ‘Maglev is short form of Magnetic Levitation. It means that these trains will practically float over guideways using the basic principles of magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains.

The rumor mills are abuzz about Apple’s new watch release for the last couple of months. Unlike a conventional watch this watch, not only shows time, but, it is also about health and fitness. The watch is capable of tracking all the vital signs and monitor critical health related factors. This watch will probably be autonomous and will be able to perform some functions independently. But, mundane tasks like sending messages or voice chat, etc. are not autonomous and will require some connection to a smartphone.

One can expect it to be an extremely  fashionable device running iOS with biometrics and other exclusive features providing integration with other iOS devices.

While most of the similar watches are of 1.6 inch display, the iWatch is speculated to come out in two sizes featuring 1.3 inch and 1.5 inch flexible AMOLED displays. Apple may also introduce a competition defying smart watch with a display of 2.5 inch diagonal measure and slightly rectangular. The watch face also expected to protrude slightly from the band, creating an arched shape. It is expected to feature a touch interface. To beat the completion hands down Apple is also testing new and innovative ways to charge the iWatch. The last generation smart watches are all massive battery drainers and hence battery and charging are two major areas of focus for Apple. Therefore Apple is likely to include technology to enable inductive, solar, and motion charging of the iWatch minimizing the constant battery draining. It is targeted to have hooping 4 too 5 days battery life. Magnetic induction charging is tipped to be the front-runner. This smartphone is likely to have a 200mAh 250mAh battery.  This Apple iWatch is likely to come along with the a sapphire lens cover, biometric recognition and an NFC chip. There is also some buzz about Apple working on some new sensors that can check a person’s hydration level and sweat components which can assist professional athletes during their training exercises. There is also a speculation that Apple iWatch can be combined with Apple’s Healthkit and it could be capable of tracking steps, calories burned, heart rate and more.

Virtual Reality Headset: Oculus Rift and possibilities

There was a time, in fact it’s still there, when you try hard to visualize virtual reality (VR) sitting in front of a large TV screen and try to feel yourself right inside the scenario which is being in the TV screen. We talk about 5D or 7D simulators where they try to enhance your experience by introducing appropriate vibration, smell, motions etc. But, the experience remains incomplete because of your viewing angle which is about 40 Degrees or so.

Anyone played virtual reality games, will realize the deficiency.  There are virtual reality headsets which give the similar effect of having a small TV inches from anyone’s face with viewing difficulty along with glitchy and headache-inducing.

Oculus is trying to overcome all those shortcomings with full stereoscopic 3D display, accurate head tracking, and the backing of several prominent game developers. The Rift, like a pair of goggles, is strapped onto the face of a person to provide immersive stereoscopic 3D display. The display provides a field of vision upto 110 degrees diagonally. This is really huge when compared to the field of vision of 40 Degrees through conventional methods. Oculus Rift makes the real difference between watching a game played on a screen and having it surrounding on the vision almost entirely.

Interestingly, Oculus VR certainly isn’t the only company making a virtual reality headgear. There are rivals which include Sony (Project Morpheus VR headset for PlayStation 4). In this blog we will restrict our evaluation to Rift only.

Companies are serious about Virtual reality hardware. Microsoft Xbox game’s chief Phil Spencer says “Virtual reality is a really interesting area, especially for games, and while it seems like it’s been ‘just over the horizon’ for the last 20 years or so, I think we could finally start seeing it prove out soon for both gamers and developers,” ; “Our Microsoft research team has been playing with virtual reality for quite a while, and while we don’t have anything to officially announce, it’s clearly an area people are excited about. The potential is definitely there.”

Oculus Rift, currently, is in its developer version. This developer kit has a resolution of 720p (1280×800), which is expected to be improved in the forthcoming consumer version. The most striking feature of Rift is its ability to overcome latency. Most Virtual Reality Headsets suffer from latency issues which cause a noticeable delay between a person moving his and when the screen follows along. Oculus has introduced real-time head tracking which adjusts the screen almost instantaneously. Gamers reported that this headset actually feels more accurate than a mouse as you just need to look at the target to aim and shoot. This feature is very clode to what we do in the real world. As of now, the Rift is only compatible with PCs, but the company has immediate plans to make it work with consoles and even mobile platforms.

The VR headset by Oculus stands out from other similar projects because of several factors. It is backed by high profile gaming developers like Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games intend to integrate the Unreal Engine, Gabe Newell of Valve taking personal interest so that Kickstarter project is successful and John Carmack (creater of Doom) promised a compatible Doom 3 game.   Oculus’s recently launched a Kickstarter venture was aimed at distributing development kits to game developers at the earliest possible. The Rift kickstarter campaign raised $ 1 million in funding, surpassing its initial goal of $ 250,000 in just one day.

The bigger story is something else. Facebook now owns Oculus VR after closing the$2bn acquisition, announced during March, 2014. Facebook is pumping $400m in cash plus 23.1m Facebook shares to the makers of the Rift headset. There is a further bonus of $300m in incentives if it hits certain milestones in the future.

Sony Xperia Z3 photosleaked yet

After leaking the specifications for the Sony Xperia Z3, popular leakster Evleaks has now leaked a couple of photos of the forthcoming flagship device. These photos are in line with what has leaked before.
